Extended Absence

On December 4 2011 I had to take a family member to the ER and from there she had to be sent out of town to a bigger hospital. She had to undergo emergency surgery and is now in a rehabilitation hospital. Needless to say I have not had the time to do anything between work and hospital visits. I'm not sure how much longer it will take, but until then this blog will sit idle. Actually I don't know if I should start back up again. Seems rather pointless at this juncture.

I was at the art store a couple of weeks ago and found some water soluble pencils called "Sketch and Wash" and along with a water brush I sketched/washed the above. I'm still painting with acrylics and hopefully will have something up soon. I was working on a painting for a few weeks, but I'm not really happy with it...so I'm starting another one.

This was painted on illustration board instead of canvas, canvas board etc. I wasn't sure how it would work with acrylic paints but I was very pleased with it. I didn't gesso the board (Drew Struzan typically does) so I can't varnish it or else it will warp.

As I finished this painting, Bryan Cranston just won his third Emmy for his role as Walter White from the AMC series Breaking Bad. His co-star Aaron Paul won an Emmy as well. Hmm... I should do a portrait of Aaron as Jesse Pinkman. Great show.

Watercolor experiment

Up till now I've been using acrylic paints, but I've always wanted to try watercolor. I tried watercolor years ago....but stopped because it's very difficult. These are my first attempts just using ivory black.

It's very hard to control and it's different than painting with acrylics. I'm not sure what the right way is to paint with watercolors, but I've been starting with a very diluted very light black and sort of work my way to the darker colors. Takes a lot of patience...which I don't have as seen here and below.

The painting above is of one of my muses, Natalie Portman and the one to the right is of the Rocketeer.
In the photo reference I was using for Natalie her right eye is covered in shadow and I rendered it as so, but looking at it now I should have added a bit of highlight in there. I think I'll keep practicing with it from time to time though acrylic is still my comfort zone.

Just a quick update - I'm still painting, but the one I'm working on now is starting to become a monkey on my back. It's a 2' x 3' and I think it'll be the last painting of that size I'll do for awhile. Takes me waaaay too long. I also have a painting I need to do for my sister...so I think I may start that and leave the big painting on the back burner for a bit.

Let see...what else? One of my idols, Frank Frazetta passed away on May 10th. Rest in Peace Mr. Frazetta and thanks for the wonderful art and inspiration.

On a final note, I just found out that one of my favorite bloggers Reis O'Brien of Geek Orthodox has decided to call it quits and concentarte on his professional and personal life. He's a great Geek of the highest order and I wish him all the best.

There was originally pinstripes on his seer sucker suit but I was happy with the way the suit came out here so I left it...plus I was anxious to start my next painting. Acrylic on canvas 16"x20"

The Drawing Table Project

Matt Graupman over at Spinadoo Comics has a neat idea about posting drawing tables. I'll admit I actually cleaned mine up a little because it's always a mess. My space is limited so my drwaing table is small just 2 feet by 3 feet. My current painting is not quite done so I threw a paint cloth over it. On the top left is J. Scott Campbell's hardcover sketch book "Monster Green" on the bottom of that is the new Alex Ross art book "Rough Justice", over on the top right is "American Chronicles the Art of Norman Rockwell", below that an issue of "Power Girl"...and some tape. Hopefully I'll be done with my painting soon.

Morgan Freeman

Welcome to the first post of 2010!

One of my all time favorite actors would have to be Mr. Morgan Freeman. I grew up with him. As a kid I used to watch "The Electric Company" on PBS and Mr. Freeman played Easy Reader, along with numerous other roles. So it was great to see him make it to the big time. I think my favorite movie of his would be "The Shawshank Redemption". Morgan Freeman also has one of the most calming, reassuring voices out there.

Koala - Color pencil

This was done...wow...about a dozen years ago. It was rendered with Prisma-colored pencils on colored Canson paper. Colored pencils are fun, but very time consuming...plus your always sharpening the pencils which wear down quite a bit. Who doesn't love Koala bears?

Dracula/Vampire Bat

I was going to wait till Halloween to post this...but then I thought "meh". It's based on the 1992 film "Bram Stoker's Dracula" by Francis Ford Coppola. Gary Oldman plays Dracula and in one point turns into this big vampire bat. One of my favorite flicks plus it says pretty close to the source material for the most part. Introspection + Progression

Here's a portrait I like to call introspection. Again, I must apologize for the crappy quality of the photo. I'm a lousy photographer. The painting looks much better in real life. On canvas 16"x20"
I've been wanting to show a progression on how my painting starts out, but I always forget to take pictures...and it's just as well because the following pictures were out of focus so I tried to correct that in photoshop.

The first step after I pencil in the subject is to paint in the darkest areas with diluted burnt umber. This gives it a water-color like appearance at first.
After that I went in and started to add some color and I also added more layers of burnt umber and alizarin crimson into the shaded areas.
Once the desired color is found I just keep adding more layers using thicker coats of paint. For this particular portrait I decided to get rid of the subjects fingers that were peeking out from under her arm. After I was satisfied with the main subject I went in and added a little color in the background.

Art book suggestions

Wow. Been awhile...I know. I'm still working on a painting for my brother in-law and should be done sometime next week(?) and I'm also working on another portrait just for fun...so hopefully I'll have some new art to post. Meanwhile I've also been perusing some art books. Mainly J.C. Leyendecker a beautiful hardcover coffee table book about one of the great unsung painters this side of Norman Rockwell.

Next is Famous Monster movie Art of Basil Gogos Mr. Gogos is perhaps best known to horror movie monster fans for his incredible covers he did for "Famous Monsters" magazine back in the 60's and 70's. Awesome stuff.

Bigfoot

I've always held a deep fascination with cryptozoology and also the paranormal. I grew up watching "In Search of..." and have always been intrigued with Sasquatch aka Bigfoot. I decided to finally do a painting of my interpretation of Bigfoot after I received an email from Loren Coleman -Author, blogger, cryptozoologist and all around nice guy.

Purposed JDF comic

Here's a couple of pages from a purposed comic I did for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which at the time was (I believe) called just the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF). This was about 12 years ago. I had a friend who used to work at the JDRF and she suggested I come up with something, so I decided to do a comic for kids who might have been diagnosed with diabetes. The villain of course is diabetes. Nothing ever became of the project, but I had fun with it. The entire comic can be found on flickr.

One of my favorite subjects to paint...cute girls with funky head gear. This is a smaller painting done on 12" x 15" canvas paper. This was a lot of fun. BTW most of my knowledge of Opera is from Bugs Bunny cartoons. So you see...watching cartoons can, indeed, be educational. The Joker

It seems pretty moot now, but here's my rendition of Heath Ledger's iconic take on the Joker. Note that there is no light reflection in the eyes. Most subjects you tend to see some sort of reflection of light which gives the subject a subconscious "twinkle in the eye" the window to the soul. Here we have none. Interesting. Or not. The term "sketch paint" is from a fantastic artist by the name of Micheal Dooney. He's got a great blog called, funny enough, Sketchpaints. Although it's been awhile since he's posted anything, but he's a professional artist....so I cut him some slack.;)

Alaskan Malamute

I love this type of dog. Very powerful with beautiful eyes. Of course I love all dogs pretty much. This is another smaller painting done on canvas paper image size 8" x 8/12". This was the second smaller painting I did. Used a stiff bristle brush to stipple the paint to get the the illusion of the heavy fur coat.

This was the third smaller paintings I've done on canvas paper 12" X 15". I painted as fast as I could and it took about 2-3 hours. There's all sorts of pictures of Kate Beckinsale where she looks more glamorous and gorgeous but I liked this particular reference with her knit cap on.

Abraham Lincoln

I never realized how misshapen Mr. Lincoln's face was. Apparently he was hit in the face by a horse as a child and as a result half his face grew a bit differently. Also he had blue/green eyes, but here they look more green. Masonite board 18" x 24"

Another small study...this time of a lion. My favorite part of this one is the surface the lion is resting upon. I just used a gob of burnt umber, white and black paint and used a palette knife to create the texture. Canvas paper 12" x 15"

One of my all time favorite American authors and humorists. Mr. Samuel Clemens aka Mark Twain. Tons o' fun to paint. This particular piece didn't take all that long to do (which for me is a miracle) it's done on canvas 24" x 30". This is actually the second painting I've done of Mr. Clemens. The first I gave to my Sister ;) in Texas. This will probably not be the last. Sorry about the crappy resolution. It looks much better in real life. Really.

The hat was a little time consuming because I stippled the black and white on, but it was worth it. The hair was also fun to do. I think painting hair is one of my favorite things to do. Here's a more recent painting done on canvas paper. The canvas paper is 12" X 15", but the painting itself is probably only 8" x 10" again with acrylic. Puppies are not only fun in real life, but they're also fun to paint. You can't go wrong with puppies. OK all together now...."Awwwwwwwwwwww."
Also....I really need to improve my penmanship. That looks like something I would've signed as a ten year old.

Here's another early painting I did...in fact it's the second painting I ever did. Obviously it's my take on Terry Dodson's Wonder Woman. I wanted to see if I could paint reflective metal. Took forever, but I was happy with the result. Acrylic on canvas 28" X 22"
BTW - I highly recommend the new DVD Wonder Woman
from legendary producer Bruce Timm and Director Lauren Montgomery. It's rated PG-13.

Hi and welcome to my blog. It's to showcase my art work. In the past couple of years I've taken up acrylic painting...never thought I would take up the brush...but I love it.
I've always been into art, as it were, (drawing mostly) but never took it too seriously.
In this blog I'll put up a few of the paintings I've done (some good, some bad, some really bad) and hopefully later on can show some progressions. First up is one of my earlier paintings (about three years ago) done on canvas 24" x 36" Not a very good scan, but you get the idea.

ETA - This was my very first post (never blogged before) my painting of Johnny should've appeared above the post instead of after. Oh well.
